Psychiatric Services & Getting Started
Explore answers to common questions about psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and getting started with mental health care at Balanced Minds Psych & Total Mind-Body Wellness in St. George, Utah.
What happens during a psychiatric evaluation?
How does medication management work?
Psychiatric evaluations include a comprehensive review of your symptoms, medical and mental health history, current medications, and treatment goals. Whether you are attending an initial evaluation or a follow-up appointment, we assess your progress and needs to guide your individualized treatment plan. Initial evaluations are 60 minutes, while follow-up appointments are typically 30 minutes.
Medication management involves evaluating your response to treatment, monitoring symptom changes and potential side effects, and adjusting medications when clinically appropriate. Your provider works with you to determine the most appropriate treatment approach based on your symptoms, treatment goals, medical history, and individual response. Follow-up and monitoring needs vary depending on your condition, medications, and clinical circumstances. Our goal is to support symptom improvement, medication safety, emotional well-being, and sustained mental health stability over time.

Ketamine and Spravato Protocols
Who qualifies for Ketamine Therapy?
How does Spravato esketamine differ?
Do I need transportation after sessions?
Eligibility for treatment depends on the specific service and an individualized clinical evaluation. We provide psychiatric care for adults experiencing a range of mental health concerns, including major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, and other psychiatric conditions. We also evaluate patients experiencing severe or treatment-resistant depression and other complex symptoms, including suicidal ideation, to determine the most appropriate treatment options. Specialized treatments, such as IM ketamine therapy and Spravato® (esketamine), require additional screening to assess eligibility, safety, and clinical appropriateness.
Spravato® (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray administered in a certified REMS treatment setting under medical supervision, with eligibility and use alongside or without an oral antidepressant depending on the approved indication and individual treatment plan.
Patients must arrange transportation home and must not drive after ketamine treatment due to potential drowsiness, dizziness, or dissociative effects. Our clinical team evaluates each patient and monitors vital signs before, during, and after treatment as clinically indicated, ensuring appropriate observation, recovery, and readiness for discharge. Patients must follow all post-treatment instructions and avoid driving until it is safe to do so under the clinic’s protocol.

Intramuscular (IM) ketamine therapy is a specialized treatment that may be considered for appropriately screened patients when clinically indicated. Your experience and treatment plan will depend on your individual needs.

Eligibility and consent: The clinician discusses the potential benefits, risks, alternatives, and treatment expectations before treatment begins.
Before treatment: Follow the clinic's instructions regarding medications, food, fluids, and transportation.
During treatment: Ketamine is administered by intramuscular injection in the clinical setting, with appropriate observation and monitoring based on your treatment protocol.
After treatment: You remain under observation until the clinical team determines that you are ready for discharge.
Transportation: Arrange for someone to drive you home. Do not drive after treatment; follow the clinic's instructions about when it is safe to resume driving and other activities.
Individualized care: Treatment response, potential side effects, and the need for additional sessions are evaluated throughout your care.
Ketamine is not appropriate for everyone. A thorough clinical assessment is required to determine whether this treatment is suitable for you.
